Artist Statement

Hi and thanks for visiting Fiore Tile Works website.  My ceramic work is motivated by a love of putting things into a blazing hot kiln and getting excited to see what comes out.  It's never exactly predictable and I think that's very exciting.  Like most people, I am often overwhelmed at the hues and dramas of the natural world.  Especially, my particular corners of it, namely the Desert (raised in Tucson, Arizona) and the Tropics (currently living in FLA).  To a boy from the woods of Maine, moving to the Sonoran Desert was like moving to Venus or Mars.  I loved the rugged rocks and fiery sunsets of my new environment.  The ever present dangers of rattlesnakes, scorpions and 1000 foot cliffs were exciting as only scary things can be.

I loved art from a young age.  If we'd had a television when I was a kid, I don't suppose I be doing this today.  But instead of TV we had shelves full of National Geographics  These became the source material for the many sketch books I filled with drawings of Ibex and Cheetahs and Gnus.   My ceramic art is primarily decorative and my aim is to produce artwork of the highest quality that straddles the line between fine craft and fine art.  I strive to produce work of artistic and engineering merit, that communicates something of the soul of the places I love and the creatures and plants that dwell there.

I hope you enjoy looking at some of the pieces I've produced.  There are many others besides, but this is a good sample.  Fiore Tile Works started out as an actual tile works, making custom tile for high end design projects.  But the artistic possibilities of the medium soon became apparent and making tiles turned out to be very dull.  The name stuck though!
